Workers dismantled the signs of the British Consulate General in East Jerusalem on Thursday, as the deadline issued by Israel for the facility's closure expired. The main plaque identifying the building and the consular section's signage were both taken down. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar had mandated a 30-day window for the shutdown, citing retaliatory measures against UK sanctions on products from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. The consulate, located in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, has historically facilitated relations with Palestinians in Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank. Despite diplomatic efforts, including a visit last week by the UK’s National Security Advisor, the closure proceeded. It should be noted that this directive specifically targets the consulate and does not affect the British Embassy in Tel Aviv.
