Algerian Parliament approves military deployment to Niger to protect Sonatrach assets
The Algerian government has received parliamentary authorization to send an Army detachment to Niger. The mission is strictly limited to securing staff and operational projects belonging to 'Sipax', the international exploration and production unit of Sonatrach. During closed-door sessions, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf explained that the deployment is a peaceful measure taken in response to a request from the Nigerien government. Parliamentarians supported the move, emphasizing its strategic importance for protecting national economic interests in the Sahel. The deployment concerns areas such as the Kafra oil field, where Sonatrach is currently conducting exploration and drilling operations to assess potential hydrocarbon resources as part of the bilateral energy cooperation.
