Sahrawi UN Representative Defends Right to Self-Determination Against US Political Pressure
On the France 24 television network, the Sahrawi Republic's permanent representative to the UN, Sidi Mohamed Omar, confronted Republican Party figure Tom Harb over US foreign policy regarding the Western Sahara issue. Harb had suggested leveraging humanitarian aid and potential sanctions against the Polisario Front to promote a specific autonomy plan.
The Sahrawi diplomat rejected this approach, characterizing it as a form of blackmail that disregards international law. He detailed an official letter sent to the UN Security Council, in which the Polisario Front expresses its opposition to the current US-drafted resolution concerning MINURSO. Omar warned that the Front would consider withdrawing from the peace process if fundamental changes are not made to the draft, which he argues deviates from the core principles of decolonization.
Sidi Mohamed Omar emphasized that the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination was earned through struggle and sacrifice, asserting that such a right cannot be nullified by international powers or commercial interests, regardless of financial threats.
