Women in the Algerian Judiciary: Nearly Half the Workforce
Women now account for nearly 50 percent of the Algerian judiciary, totaling 3,153 out of 6,318 judges, according to Asma Aissiou, head of a project supporting female magistrates' careers. At a workshop organized by the Ministry of Justice and the UNDP, data highlighted the significant presence of women in judicial bodies, reaching 90 percent in specialized commercial courts. While progress is evident, efforts to increase female representation in top leadership positions, currently at 18.18 percent, remain a priority. The session also addressed legislative gains for women, including family protection laws and anti-violence measures. Natacha Van Rijn, the UNDP representative in Algeria, praised the country's efforts, describing its judicial gender equality model as a leading example that could enrich international discussions.
