Algeria Achieves Self-Sufficiency in Durum Wheat and Barley: A Landmark Agricultural Season

Abdelghani Ben Ali, Secretary General of the National Interprofessional Council for Cereals, confirmed that the 2025/2026 agricultural season marked a significant milestone, with Algeria officially achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat and barley. National production reached between 33 and 35 million quintals, surpassing domestic demand of 23 to 26 million quintals, thanks to farmers' efforts, favorable rainfall, and high-level government support. While soft wheat self-sufficiency remains a goal, Ben Ali noted it requires shifting dietary habits to cut high import costs. To preserve these gains, the country is implementing strategic storage projects, including 350 local centers and large-scale silos. Ben Ali advocated for reform in subsidy policies, the enhancement of mechanization, and stronger ties between academic research and the agricultural sector to meet national targets by 2027.
