Following King Mohammed VI's address on October 31, 2025, regarding Morocco's historical borders, Nouakchott has requested the establishment of a commission to reach a consensual and permanent definition of the Western Sahara borders. Mauritania views this as a vital security measure to prevent any unilateral territorial shifts that could impact its strategic interests, particularly near the crucial port of Nouadhibou and the locality of Lagouira. Although Mauritania maintains de facto control over Lagouira, it holds no legal claim of sovereignty over the area since 1979. Concerns have been heightened by reports of potential Moroccan development projects involving Emirati partners, as well as the progression of political processes regarding the territory. By advocating for a border settlement now, Nouakchott aims to safeguard its position while maintaining its policy of equidistance between Morocco and the Polisario Front.
