Bayer aims to introduce hybrid corn seeds to Algeria's desert regions
German agricultural giant Bayer is expanding its footprint in Algeria by testing hybrid corn seed varieties specifically designed for desert climates. The project targets an coverage area of 5,000 hectares over the next five years. Field trials, which commenced in 2026, utilize center-pivot irrigation to determine if these varieties can withstand local environmental challenges, such as water scarcity and drought. By leveraging digital innovation and data analysis, the company seeks to align its scientific research with the specific requirements of Algerian farmers. Future commercialization remains contingent upon the success of these trials and the ability of the seeds to deliver consistent yields under actual production conditions.
