New York: Muslim World League leads global call for ethical AI standards
The Muslim World League hosted a major event in New York during the UN General Assembly to address the intersection of artificial intelligence, human dignity, and faith. The gathering brought together key figures, including League Secretary-General Dr. Mohammad Al-Issa, UN Alliance of Civilizations High Representative Miguel Moratinos, and various global experts from academia and the tech industry. The sessions focused on the need to incorporate cultural and religious insights into AI ethics to combat hate speech and digital violence. A major outcome was the recommendation for the UN Alliance of Civilizations to lead a committee tasked with developing a global code of ethics for AI. Furthermore, Dr. Al-Issa announced plans to establish a specialized AI laboratory, automate the processing of Islamic sources while respecting intellectual property, and create a dedicated unit to rectify mistranslations that have historically led to misleading perceptions of religious texts.
