Édouard Philippe pushes for the repeal of the 1968 Franco-Algerian agreement

As a candidate for the 2027 French presidential election, Édouard Philippe continues to emphasize his commitment to terminating the 1968 Franco-Algerian agreement on immigration. During a recent television appearance on France 2, the former Prime Minister reiterated his plan to revoke the treaty, which has regulated the entry and residence of Algerian citizens in France for nearly 60 years.

Philippe, who was among the first to support former ambassador Xavier Driencourt's call to scrap the deal, argues for a shift toward standard immigration law. He distanced himself from Emmanuel Macron's approach, arguing that past attempts by French presidents to normalize relations through favorable provisions have failed. In addition to his stance on the 1968 agreement, Philippe pledged to cut legal immigration flows by half, aiming for fewer than 200,000 arrivals annually.
