Algeria-Niger Military Cooperation: Clarifying the Strategic Partnership
Following the decision to deploy Algerian National People's Army (ANP) troops to Niger, the National Coordination for the Civil-Military Project (CNPCM) in Niamey has clarified that the collaboration does not involve replacing local forces. Niger remains responsible for its own national security. According to the CNPCM, the Algerian military's presence focuses on training, border intelligence coordination, and securing the Trans-Saharan route, within a framework of mutual cooperation. Niamey emphasizes that this partnership is based on Algeria's status as a regional military power and shared borders, while ensuring the preservation of national sovereignty. Supporters of the government also highlighted that the Charter of Refoundation provides a legal basis for these military agreements, particularly in situations deemed as urgent security necessities.
