The municipality of Constantine has ordered a technical assessment of the Mellah Slimane bridge, locally known as the "elevator bridge," in cooperation with the National Technical Control Body for Public Works. The move follows images circulating online depicting signs of decay on this historic pedestrian structure, which links the city center to the railway station area. The local Director of Public Works confirmed that engineers from the capital will arrive shortly to evaluate the facility and determine the necessary repairs. The 125-meter-long bridge has served as a key walkway and tourist landmark since 1925. Beyond the structural concerns, citizens are raising issues regarding the maintenance of the elevator and stairs, citing water leaks and poor sanitary conditions, stressing the need for long-term care rather than temporary fixes to ensure the safety and preservation of this iconic site.
