Saharan water sources in Algeria face pollution from irresponsible tourism
Water bodies in the Algerian Sahara are at risk of contamination as tourists use them for bathing and cleaning, often utilizing chemicals. These practices, which occur under the watch of some tour organizers, pose a severe threat to wildlife, particularly camels, which rely on these scarce resources for survival. The National Committee for the Protection of the Environment and Animals has urged authorities to increase field supervision and mandates that travel agencies educate clients on environmental safety. Experts warn that chemical residues in stagnant desert water endanger the fragile ecosystem.
