Security authorities in Constantine and Skikda have seized nearly two quintals of silver mercury, a highly sensitive and banned substance, while dismantling criminal networks involved in its smuggling and illegal mining activities. In Constantine, the regional anti-organized crime unit broke up two networks, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals and the seizure of over 176 kilograms of mercury, alongside a vehicle and illicit proceeds. Meanwhile, in Skikda, the Search and Intervention Brigade in Azzaba dismantled a four-member group engaged in illegal mining using hazardous chemicals. The operation led to the seizure of 17.77 kilograms of mercury, a small truck, weighing equipment, tools, and rock fragments containing traces of precious metals. All suspects were presented before the respective public prosecutors to face charges related to the smuggling and illegal handling of hazardous materials.
