Boudjima: Saturday market empowers local craftswomen
In the town of Boudjima, near Tizi Ouzou, a weekly market exclusively for women serves as a vital economic hub. Rooted in traditional social customs, this gathering has evolved into a practical platform where rural women and artisans sell their home-grown produce and handmade crafts without intermediaries. Following a request from the participants, the market was moved three weeks ago to the newly refurbished 100 commercial units in the town center. Customers can find a wide range of goods, including organic vegetables, farm eggs, traditional pottery, and local food specialties at affordable prices. Hassiba Arkam, a local provincial assembly member who supported the project, noted that the market has revitalized traditional crafts and boosted local income. Plans are now underway to replicate this success in other villages and to provide permanent spaces for these women to develop their entrepreneurial activities.
