Jordan launches airstrikes in Syria following church attack
On Monday, October 26, the Jordanian military conducted airstrikes in southern Syria, naming the operation "Jordanian Deterrence – Hamoud." This action followed a violent attack at St. George's Church in Jordan’s Karak governorate, which left nine people dead and 25 injured. Amman stated that the strikes targeted militant groups linked to the perpetrators of the church assault. Conversely, Syrian authorities reported that the bombardment resulted in the death of eight civilians, including women and children, in Deraa province, criticizing the lack of coordination for these operations. Previously, Jordanian security forces apprehended three Jordanian men for the church shooting, highlighting ongoing security challenges along the border. Damascus has responded by closing the Nassib border crossing and launching an investigation, while diplomatic efforts are underway to address the rising tensions.
