Local Elections: A Deceptive Calm in Party Headquarters Amidst Candidate Shortages

As the deadline for submitting candidate lists for local elections to the National Independent Authority for Elections approaches, Algerian political party headquarters appear deceptively calm. Beneath this quiet exterior, parties are struggling with a shared challenge: the reluctance of citizens and skilled individuals to run for office. At the FLN headquarters, political bureau member Fayçal Ghemis confirmed that the selection process was difficult, as the party balanced academic and professional criteria while facing shortages in remote municipalities due to the migration of youth toward major cities. The Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) faces similar hurdles. Vice President Ahmed Sadouk noted that declining confidence in political work has made attracting qualified candidates a daunting task. Despite these obstacles, both parties continue their final efforts to secure representation across as many local and provincial assemblies as possible before the doors close.
