Is drinking water enough to prevent kidney stones? A major study sheds new light

A significant clinical trial published in 'The Lancet' indicates that simply increasing fluid intake may not be enough to prevent kidney stones from recurring. The study followed 1,658 participants over two years, utilizing a behavioral program that included smart water bottles, reminders, and financial incentives to ensure a daily urine output of 2.5 liters. Despite successfully increasing fluid consumption, the results showed no significant reduction in the rate of symptomatic stone recurrence. Researchers noted that the difficulty in maintaining high fluid intake suggests a need for more personalized prevention strategies and the development of effective behavioral and pharmacological interventions tailored to individual patient needs.
