The UN Fourth Committee on Decolonization in New York saw significant diplomatic clashes as the Moroccan delegation repeatedly disrupted hearings concerning the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. These obstruction attempts led to formal protests from other attending delegations. The Algerian delegation reiterated that Western Sahara remains a non-self-governing territory awaiting decolonization, noting the lack of an independent mechanism to monitor human rights in the region. Civil society representatives, including Samir Bouaziz, emphasized that the Sahrawi right to independence is an inalienable right that must be exercised through a free and democratic process, rejecting any imposed political arrangements. Participants also highlighted the ongoing exploitation of Sahrawi natural resources and questioned how many more resolutions are needed to end the humanitarian plight caused by the long-standing conflict.
