Combatting Private Tutoring: A Strategic Priority for Algerian Education

Education researcher Nouar Mebarkia has launched a strong critique of the private tutoring phenomenon, labeling it as "theft-lessons," while expressing his full support for the President's move to task the National Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CNESE) with tackling this issue. Mebarkia argues that these practices have severely damaged the national school system, turning education into a profit-driven trade that burdens families and deepens social disparities. The researcher explains that private tutoring has discouraged active pedagogy in favor of rote learning, hindering the development of students' true capabilities and undermining the principle of equal opportunity. He highlights that this phenomenon has caused rifts among teaching staff and damaged the prestige of schools. Mebarkia trusts that the relevant national bodies will issue firm recommendations, potentially criminalizing the practice, to restore the school's role as the primary center for learning and character building.
